Reading Is Fun (RIF)
In 1974, Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated received approval from Reading is Fundamental, Inc. to operate its AKA-RIF Project in the Huntsville City and Madison County School Systems.
In 1975, the first book distributions were held in the West Huntsville Elementary School (Huntsville City School Systems) and Central School (Madison County School System) with 100 students participating.
On February 4, 2003, AKA - RIF Kids at ten school sites were invited to take part in “Read With Me”. The 2003 Community Reading Challenge, a national RIF project sponsored by the MetLife Foundation. West Huntsville Elementary School was the small site winner. It is closed today.
Today, after over 45 years the project is continuing. It now will serve more than 1,000 students at 9 Huntsville City and Madison County School sites. Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter is helping students throughout Huntsville and Madison County to love reading and to understand that READING IS FUNDAMENTAL.
